Judge Çetin Sönmez was sentenced to 8 years and 9 months in prison on 30th August 2018 over the pretext of terrorism charges. Moreover, court ruled continuation of his arrest during appeal process.

Judge Sönmez was accused of rejecting the application of arrest for Adil Öksüz who was accused by Government as one of the contraversial coup attempt suspects. On the contrary, judge Köksal Çelik, who firstly released Adil Öksüz has not been even investigated.

Judge Sönmez defended himself that, he decided pursuant to file contents which does not include concrete evidence about Öksüz’s interference with coup attempt as of the date of decision likewise judge Köksal Çelik who ruled the same decision before him.
